The castle

From the visitor centre, paths lead on circuitous routes through the grounds, passing a ruined medieval tithe barn, wildflower meadow and herb garden on the approach to the battlemented castle, its tall chimneys rising romantically above the trees. You enter via the original fifteenth-century west wing, where a series of rooms are given over to historical exhibits, from a collection of replica Tudor costumes and original lacework to stories of Henry VIII and a lock of Katherine Parr’s hair. Drop into the adjacent coffee shop, housed in what was formerly the castle kitchens and now bedecked with heraldic banners. The main reason to visit Sudeley, though, is to spend time outdoors: appreciating the architecture and gardens as you stroll trumps the exhibition rooms ten times over.

If you can’t get enough of Sudeley, book a place on one of the special art tours. These offer guided visits to the Ashcombes’ private apartments in the east wing, taking in the castle’s grandest rooms, bedecked with Tudor finery as well as artworks by Van Dyck, Rubens and others.
